Take a ultrapowerful freshly installed windows machine.

Open event viewer to look at the windows logs. Gaze at the half-drawn window decorations while the multi core, multi GHz, multi GB machine burns cpucycles trying to show you those few events. Try to scroll and marvel at the lack of refresh.

Do the same on a Windows XP (or, for that matter, I think also 2K or NT) and compare the difference.

Then install Linux (Slackware 3.0) on your old 386 with 8MB of RAM with 80MB IDE HDD. Login as root. less /var/log/messages. Scroll.
